No one knows exactly what events will be awaiting guests when they arrive. Oh… and everything you see on the island is FREE. Don’t even THINK about tipping your bartender cause you can’t. Woo-ho!

Sandra posted a ton of pix from the event here…

15-minute exercise: memories of a birthday

The second exercise Vanessa Davis gave us at her presentation tonight. The first one was really cool: Iconic Reductions: we drew 54 images in 5 seconds each, in response to things like "war," "cat," "gross," and "golf."

I couldn’t swear these events all happened at the same birthday party–it was much too long ago, and I’m not sure if it’s even documented in any of my old journals.

No, I’m not a good artist. I know.

I want to be just like you. (see notes)

Princess Mariana- Monterey, CA

The Princess Mariana is 252 feet 3 inches long and is powered by two 570 horse power Deutz-MWMs. She was built in 2003. She is owned by Carlos Peralta Quintero, the former owner of Mexican cellular phone company Iusacell and the current owner of the Puebla Tigres baseball team, who named her after his wife Mariana Tort. She cost million (in a cash transaction) but can be chartered for only 6,500 a week.

UPDATE: It turns out that I had an older price- it is actually 4,840 per week. The weekly price is only the starting point . "Expect an additional expense known as advanced provisioning allowance, or APA, which is usually 30 percent of the cost of yacht, but can fluctuate based on fuel price. APA includes all food, fuel, bar and dockage. These charges are recorded during the trip and are available for review at the end. If you and your guests came in below the 30 percent, you will get the difference back. If, on the other hand, you went over, you will be responsible for those costs. Tips will add 10 to 15 percent. APA does not include crew gratuity or sales tax in the cost of the charter, so make sure to ask your broker which states and countries have sales tax and cruising tax. It is standard to leave 10 to 15 percent on top of the weekly charter cost for crew gratuity. That means the crew" expects about 4,000 "in gratuity for a job well done. Cash is preferred, but when tips are especially high, they are paid through the charter broker or wired to the yacht at the end of the trip."

1st Lt. Donarski inspires golf crowd at Children’s Miracle Network Classic

By Tim Hipps
FMWRC Public Affairs

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – A Soldier who twice was nearly declared dead wowed PGA Tour golfers and fans during the Pro-Am portion of the Children’s Miracle Network Classic Nov. 11-12 at Walt Disney World Resort.

Special Forces 1st Lt. Brian Donarski, a member of the 2005 All-Army Golf Team, rediscovered his game while playing the Palm and Magnolia Courses that wrap around the Shades of Green Armed Forces Recreation Center, not far from the gates of the Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Wide World of Sports.

A former scratch golfer who dabbled with triathlons, Donarski is an uncanny athlete. Toss in the fact that he lived to tell about encountering an anti-tank mine in Iraq and getting hit by a truck in Arizona and you have one determined Soldier who has exceeded Disney-like expectations.

Nobody in their right mind could craft a fairy tale as unimaginable as the banged-up Donarski matching drives and putts with professional golfers John Huston, Greg Kraft, Greg Owen and Alex Cejka. But that’s what he did for two days at Disney, where Donarski shot 3-over-par for two rounds.

“To see him out here playing as well as he’s playing, after what he’s been through, is absolutely amazing,” Kraft said. “His game is really good. He has a gift. And to not only to be this good, but to have such an unbelievable attitude and personality, I just tip my hat to him.”

Donarski expected to enjoy a couple of quiet rounds with the pros before Orlando Sentinel columnist George Diaz alerted Central Floridians that a wounded warrior would be playing Disney’s Palm Course on Veterans Day.

Next thing you knew, Donarski was the talk of the Magic Kingdom.

“People were coming up to me and saying: ‘Hey, Lieutenant, how you doing?’ And I was thinking, ‘How do people know I’m a lieutenant?’” said Donarski, 42, a native of Roseau, Minn., who is stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C. “I really didn’t realize the excitement until the pros started interacting with me and giving me tips. Because it’s their environment, I wanted to just stay clear of them and let them do their thing. But they were just so personable. They were eager to help me.

“Greg Owen just gave me such positive energy,” Donarski added. “He had such a positive attitude, even though his game didn’t go as well as he wished.”

Next thing he knew, Donarski, who had the amateur advantage of hitting from the closer white tee boxes, was dueling with the pros.

“If you’re a single-digit handicap, you’re really relying on yourself more so than your pro,” Donarski said of the complicated best-ball format that took amateurs’ handicaps into account. “I helped out on every hole that Greg messed up. I picked him up on tougher holes where I got a stroke.

“It was neat to hit shots, too, because the pros are hitting it a long ways, but I was able to reach the par-5s, even though they were like 565 from the whites. It was a huge advantage. So it’s good to see them shoot in – you kind of get a better understanding from what you see them do on TV.”

As a team, Owen and Donarski shot 6-under-par on Veterans Day, but it did not take long for the Soldier to realize he had forgotten some of the game’s fundamentals. After serving 11 years with the U.S. Marine Corps, Donarski was honorably discharged in 1998 but felt compelled to return to the military after the World Trade Center was attacked.

In October 2004, after being examined by seven doctors and passing six Army physical fitness tests, Donarski waived his VA benefits and enlisted in the Army. During Operation Iraqi Freedom combat, his vehicle struck a roadside bomb on March 5, 2006, causing Donarski to receive a Traumatic Brain Injury, fractured neck, bulged disks in his back, and shoulder surgery. He lost vision in his right eye for four months, and most of his teeth sustained hairline cracks.

Donarski, however, was far from being finished. After rehabilitating for 13 months at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, he deployed to Afghanistan, where he had a hand in the successful implementation of more than 400 combat missions.

After nearly 15 years of military service, Donarski completed Army Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a lieutenant on April 23, 2009. Seven months later, the Purple Heart recipient was hit by a truck while bicycle training for a triathlon. That collision required surgery on his other shoulder, along with the return of TBI, nightmares and more loss of vision.

Donarski then spent five months at the VA Poly Trauma Center in Richmond, Va., before transferring to the VA Medical Center in Salisbury, N.C. His recovery continues at Fort Bragg, with the assistance of Charlotte Metro Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.

On his second day at Disney, Donarski posted a 77. Again, he attempted to defer to the pros.

“But John Huston was awesome,” Donarski said. “I kind of gave him his space, but he kept just coming to me. He would ask me about my family – a really down-to-earth man. And Greg Kraft was just a riot. He made my round very comfortable.”

Donarski, who just returned to golf in August, took the tournament in stride, all the while battling the pain with an assortment of remedies.

“I really didn’t get nervous today,” he said. “I struck the ball really well at [All-Army] camp. It’s just my putting that is struggling. I kind of see like in a tunnel – I can’t see out of my peripheral – and for some reason the brain tries to compensate and pushes the ball. The things that the pros gave me to work on, I really concentrated on trying to use those tips. But when you have bad habits, it’s better to try to correct it on the range.

“My core is slowly getting better.”

Donarski’s darkest secret at Disney was that he was soaking in a hot tub every day at 6 a.m. while many golfers were working on the driving range under the lights.

“To loosen up my body before I actually go to the range,” he explained. “My goal is to get back into cross-fit and a lot of endurance stuff. The doctors told me I’m going to have a lot of pain because when the blast went through me it stunned the nerves in my body. They say exercise is the key to keep your body more fluid, so my goal is to try to get back into that.

“Physically, the blast took more because I was more in tune to getting back into the fight,” Donarski said. “When I got injured again, it really affected my brain, so I’d say mentally it affected me more because there were things going on that I couldn’t explain. I was telling doctors and they were like so amazed by how well I knew about the fight or flight. They say when you’re in a stressful combat situation your body kicks into the fight or flight. Everybody has it – just a mechanism that protects you and makes you more aware of things.”

Donarski was not sure, however, if he would return to this point.

“It’s pretty exciting to hear professional golfers say, ‘Wow, you’ve got a good game. Nice drive,’” he said. “I think if I got more of an opportunity to be in the environment – I didn’t seem nervous today, but I was aware that there were more people here today than yesterday – and I think I started to try too hard instead of just playing my game. I started hooking the ball a little more. Usually, I don’t hook the ball.

“I’m a pretty straight shooter.”

All in all, Donarski is getting better, slowly but surely – both on and off the course.

“My coach, Jim Estes, has taught me how to be patient,” he said. “The game is very humbling. It teaches you patience. With my injury, I hope I’m able to continue to push myself and get better so maybe I’ll get an invite again.

“Being comfortable over the ball is one thing. Making it happen on the course is another.”

Donarski said he could not thank the Army enough for providing this opportunity.

“I truly appreciate it,” he said. “I do feel blessed. I’m just thankful they gave me this opportunity. It just lets me know that they do care about wounded Soldiers and they care about us getting back on our feet. Even if I don’t stay in the military, they knew I was a healthy young man when I came in and they’re going to help me get back to the most functional point in my life.”

Donarski founded an organization called America’s Finest Rewards to help spread the word that more injured Soldiers need help. The website is www.americasfinestrewards.com.

“Coming home and bringing stuff from war, it’s a terrible thing,” he said. “It’s the life we choose but we stay positive to continue on. When I see a Soldier that is injured or has a prosthetic, I could have been like that. I do feel blessed even though my limbs do hurt sometimes and I have a bad headache quite often. And I have pain in my shoulders. I always say I’m blessed because things could’ve been worse.

“I know golf is a healer because the world was too busy when I came back and I was injured. Golf put me in a slow-motion to allow me to rehabilitate at the pace I needed to rehabilitate instead of trying to speed up everything. My body needed time, and golf taught me that.”

It carries over at home, where Donarski is most focused on taking care of his wife, Tara, and daughters Maya and McKenzi.

“I’m thankful that I’m able to function better with my Family and have a healthier life,” he said. “That was my concern because I was having issues with dealing with people again. But seeking care and getting the proper treatment, I’m getting better.”

6 Weeks to Winning Weekend Golf

Mark Twain commented on golf by saying, “it is a good walk spoiled”. He was frustrated by the game. Certainly there are days when “it is a good walk spoiled”, thankfully there are moments when it is “a good life made better”.

This book is about the techniques that will make your walk better. How to putt, how to aim, and how to think about each round of golf. Playing the game better will help you enjoy it more. The most valuable winning techniques that I have been passing along for more t

Hixson successfully defends Military Long Drive Championship 091103

By Tim Hipps
FMWRC Public Affairs

MESQUITE, Nev. – Coast Guard Ensign Ryan Hixson defeated Army Reserve Pfc. Nate Chadwick Oct. 28 to win his third Military Long Drive Championship presented by 7UP.

Chadwick took the lead with a 335-yard drive on his last shot in the final pairing, setting the stage for Hixson’s dramatic 343-yard walk-off blast into a strong headwind that secured his third consecutive triumph in the Army Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation event.

“That was the most emotion I’ve ever shown on a tee box,” said Hixson, 27, who pumped his fists into the air and screamed at the crowd after completing the mission. “It was special, being the third time and coming down to the very end – I had to hit a really good ball, and was able to do it.

“Man, I’m still excited.”

After failing to keep his first five balls on the grid in the final showdown against Hixson, Chadwick’s last shot came to rest about 5 yards inside the left sideline and 335 yards from the tee, surpassing Hixson’s longest previous drive in the finals: 321 yards.

Chadwick, who thought the ball was headed out of bounds, turned around, tipped his cap to the crowd, and headed to congratulate Hixson, who pointed out that the shot was good while the audience roared its approval.

“Those last five minutes were such a roller-coaster,” said Chadwick, 25, of Milwaukee. “I went from hitting my first three out-of-bounds and seeing Ryan put up a decent number – 321 – then coming back and putting what I thought were the next three out of bounds. I was walking over to shake Ryan’s hand and say thank you to the crowd and I just saw Ryan running at me and pointing at the screen, saying: ‘It’s in!’
“You talk about going from a complete low to just the highest of highs. It was unbelievable.”

At that point, Hixson knew he had more work to do.

“I saw it was going past 321, and I was on a beeline for my driver,” Hixson said of Chadwick’s final drive. “I knew what I had to do. I try not to get caught up in what the other guys do and what they hit. All I can control is how I hit the ball, and that’s all that was going through my mind.”

Hixson hooked his fourth ball wide left and was down to his final two before launching the ,000 winner.

“I hit that thing as good as I can hit a ball – dead straight,” Hixson said.

Chadwick, who has competed twice in the open division of the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship, could only stand back and watch.

“I knew Ryan had it in his bag,” he said. “When he came up to play I said: ‘It’s not over; this kid can just blow it right by me.’ I was just sitting there counting bullets. I dodged one, then he just smoked one down the right side and he deserves all the credit in the world.”

Throughout the competition, 20-23 mile per hour winds steadily blew into the golfers’ faces and pushed balls right to left on the grid, where the wind-chill factor hovered around 40 degrees.

“Of course, I wish the players had better conditions to hit in, but they all had a great attitude about it,” said Art Sellinger, president and founder of the Long Drivers of America. “They’re all great sportsmen, and I think the best guy won. Nate Chadwick was awesome – great last shot: 335 into that wind. As a person who runs this event and a person who has won a couple events in my life, 335 and 343 respectively on this grid in the sunshine are 390 to 400-yard drives, easy. These guys are really the real deal.”

Sellinger was even more impressed by how Hixson handled the pressure at the Mesquite Sports and Event Complex.

“I had a feeling about Ryan the whole night, but then when I saw 335, I thought: ‘That’s a big ball, right there. I just don’t know if he has that.’ The most impressive thing to me about Ryan tonight was I don’t know if Ryan thought that he had it won. If Ryan thought that he had it done, and then all of a sudden he had to go back out and hit again, that’s an incredible thing to have to recover.

Chadwick, who flaunted his Milwaukee roots by playing in short sleeves, toyed with the audience for being all bundled up in layers and seemed both comfortable and confident on the tee box.

“These finals were a perfect setup,” Chadwick said. “Ryan plays a nice draw and I play a power fade, so it was a match-up of which style was going to come out on top. We were the two biggest hitters all day, and we knew it.

Obviously, Ryan hit one perfect down the right side and the wind took it back, and he’s the champ once again.”

Hixson earned the top-seeded spot in the six-man finals earlier in the day with a 342-yard drive on his final ball in the second round of qualifying.

Army Sgt. Brian Webb of Fort Eustis, Va., was seeded third and posted a best drive of 293 yards in the finals.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Kenneth Leonard of Fort Lewis, Wash., was seeded fourth and drove the ball 277 yards. Army Staff Sgt. Jake Taylor of Fort Bragg, N.C., was seeded fifth and finished with a 312-yard blast. Army Staff Sgt. Tafuna Oney of Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, rounded out the finalists. Perhaps the most consistent swinger in the preliminaries, his longest drive in the finals was 320 yards.

“This was probably one of the best experiences of my life,” Chadwick said. “It just doesn’t get any better than this. From the way Dr. Pepper/Snapple Group has taken care of us all week to the Long Drivers of America putting on a show for us and all the credit they give us is unbelievable. There’s nothing like it. I just want to thank all the sponsors.”

Twenty servicemen earned an all-expenses-paid trip to Mesquite to compete for bragging rights as the Armed Forces’ biggest hitter by winning local tournaments at 20 military installations and duty stations worldwide.

“Army MWR does great things for our troops all over the world,” Sellinger said. “I’ve seen it live and in action. I’m so glad that we have it for our sport, so glad 7UP steps up, and we have a great event. I’m very proud of this relationship.

“These guys are starting their own tradition like we did in 1995 with the RE/MAX World Long Drive. They’ve already got their own highlight videos and the highlights keep coming.”

As defending champion, Hixson had earned a bye into the RE/MAX World Long Drive preliminaries the day after the military competition.

“Ryan Hixson is doing what (five-time RE/MAX World Long Drive champion) Jason Zuback did out of the gate in 1996, 97, 98 and 99, so he has set the bar,” Sellinger said.

Hixson, who married and completed Officer Candidate School since winning last year, hopes his success will help raise awareness of the Coast Guard’s relevance among America’s Armed Forces.

“Hopefully, some people who are on the fence of wanting to enlist or go to OCS or whatever the case may be, will say, ‘Hey, this guy’s in the Coast Guard and he’s got opportunities to do things like this. Maybe I can have that opportunity.’ Just because you’re in the military doesn’t mean you’re going to go to the desert. There are a lot of other opportunities and things to be done.”

Hixson survived the first day of eliminations in the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship the next day, but was eliminated before the Friday night finals.

He vowed to return next year for another opportunity in the desert— and whether or not he qualifies for another shot at the military event, his win this year earns him another bye into the 2010 Open Division event.

Chadwick plans to meet him there.

”I’ll definitely be back next year,” he said.

The front of the fairway is about 100 yards from this tee box, over the environmental hazard. It is about 260 yards to the second hazard. The green is over on the left of the photo, behind the trees.

A few nice golf tips images I found:

Goose Abuse
golf tips

This was done as a project for my Intro to Computer Graphics class. We were told to bring in some photos – but not exactly told what we were going to do with them. I brought in a pretty random selection of photos – including a picture of Ross golfing and some geese out by Lake Sno-Tip.

As you can see, I took the goose from his picture and placed him over top of Ross’ golf ball. I then tried to match Ross’ natural shadow with a shadow of the goose.

I am pretty happy with the way that this turned out. I haven’t been too happy with my projects thus far for the computer graphics class – but I’m satisfied with this one.

No geese were harmed (or hit with golf clubs) in the process of creating this photo.

Foxglove – Digitalis purpurea
golf tips

A lone foxglove found growing in land cleared of gorse on Royal Dornoch Golf Club. The foxglove is a biennual plant, flowering only in it’s second year.
It was such a windy day that I could not capture the whole flower as it was swaying like a pendulum at the tip!

A great clip of Fred Astaire dancing and playing golf at the same time. It takes great balance to achieve this and also the firm planting of the left foot prior to the start of the downswing. Listen and you will hear the tap of the plant and then the start of the downswing. The original Happy Gilmour???
